Groundworks Buyer Assistant

The role of Assistant Buyer will sit within our Purchasing department supporting the Groundworks division. The successful candidate will support the wider team by placing purchase orders, compiling quotations, preparing and undertaking tender enquiries, through to liaising with colleagues and suppliers resolving and answering queries.

The role will require an organised individual who is able to work in a fast-paced environment, managing a varied workload. Previous experience in a similar role, or in the Construction industry is desirable. We envisage this role developing as the successful candidate develops their knowledge, with the potential for support towards industry recognised qualifications.

  • Compiling quotations for price and lead time comparisons, prior to order placement.
  • Understanding value for money is not always solely price related. Lead times, fixed price proposals and service levels are also critical.
  • Preparing and undertaking material tender enquiries with supporting documentation.
  • Preparing material costs for Quantity Surveyors in relation to variation orders.
  • Maintaining procurement online filing systems, including ensuring all certification and product datasheets are up to date.
  • Raising purchase orders from pre-approved price lists and term deal agreements.
  • Liaising with external suppliers and other members of the company with regards to supply and demand of materials and resources.
  • Shadowing the Groundworks Buyer for personal development and opportunities to learn.
  • Ensuring materials being purchased conform to the British or European standards
  • Ensuring materials have the necessary certification before ordering.
  • Ensuring materials have the necessary COSHH data and manual handling details
  • Noting specific project delivery instructions and stating on every purchase order


Ideally, our successful candidate will have:

  • Basic product knowledge of construction materials. Groundworks related materials is preferable
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • A can-do, proactive approach to problem solving
  • Excellent communication & presentation skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
