Being a great listener, an active team player and a respected and respectful colleague, all make for a great human resources person. Welcome to the world of Angela Challis…
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I’ve always found psychology really interesting so I wanted to be a counsellor. I enjoy listening and the idea of being able to help people.
What did you do before working at Anderson?
I was in retail management for a long time, which I never really enjoyed. I did learn a lot and met lots of great people but I wanted to go for something completely different with opportunities to progress.
What does an average working day for an Anderson HR administrator involve?
From May 2020, I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to progress into the HR administrator role. The role varies with all sorts of different tasks, such as providing support to the HR function with different projects, issuing terms and conditions of employment, setting up new starters, processing weekly payrolls and booking Occupational Health Assessments for our site based employees. No day is the same within the HR Function. I also I like that I get the opportunity to mix with everyone from the company, those being both office and site based employees.
Since returning to work after the initial Covid-19 lockdown, numerous changes have been made around the workplace. How have you and your colleagues adjusted to the changes and how important is it to you personally to adhere to measures?
I feel it’s been handled really well and has always been taken seriously by the whole team. I find it easy to maintain social distancing, as the desks have all been spread out with screens in place. There’s also hand sanitiser and anti-bac wipes wherever you look, so I definitely feel safe and comfortable in the work place.
Employees of Anderson often refer to the Anderson way of doing things. What does the Anderson way mean to you?
To me it means a strong work ethic and teamwork. We all play our parts and have mutual respect for each other to get the job done.
Share with us one thing your Anderson colleagues wouldn’t know about you?
My partner and I are really excited to share the news that we’re expecting our first child in July.
