Anderson relaunches successful apprenticeship scheme
29 April 2021
Following a year-long hiatus owing to the Covid-19 crisis, Anderson has relaunched its apprenticeship scheme, which was set up 17 years ago to encourage new talent into the construction workforce.
The company is currently looking to recruit 10 new groundwork, aged 16 and over, for a two-year Level 2 Diploma in Construction Operations.
The rollout follows news that the construction section in the UK has seen apprenticeship numbers fall by 40 percent as an outcome of the pandemic.
Steve Hammond, training manager at Anderson, said: “It’s time to reignite interest in young people in construction-based careers. Pre-coronavirus the industry was working incredibly hard to attract new blood into the sector – an industry which is in the grips of a skills gap with plenty of work and not enough people to do it.
“Covid-19 has highlighted the importance in finding stability, consistency and security in a job and a construction apprenticeship would allow them all this as well as opportunity to grow and climb the career ladder.”
Sasha Harvey, a trainee site engineer, started her apprenticeship with Anderson in 2019 at the age of 16. Speaking of her role with Anderson, Sasha said: “One of the best ways to get started in the workplace is through an apprenticeship like mine. Not only can you earn while you learn, but completing an apprenticeship can increase your future earning potential.”
John Donnachie, 21 (pictured above), is a current groundworks apprentice with Anderson and has worked for the company for two years. Speaking at Anderson’s Chilton Place development, Jon said: “It’s been a really tough year but it’s great to know that there are still opportunities for people to go into construction and work for Anderson. We learn a lot here and it all adds up to great experience, qualifications and personal growth.”
Candidates for the Groundwork Apprenticeship Scheme for 2021 will take part in a pre-apprenticeship programme in August run by Colchester Institute with 10 successful candidates enrolling on the full apprenticeship in September.
